The charming Notting Hill Bookshop is just off the Portobello Road. It was originally set up by Sarah Anderson in 1980, a passionate traveller who travelled the world 10 years earlier – a journey that inspired her to open her own dedicated travel bookshop. This was the first travel bookshop that grouped all books on a country basis, history, biographies, novels and travel books in the simple idea that if you're travelling to a country - you may want to read about it as well!
It is in this spirit of being passionate about what one does, that the Bookshop has been an inspiration to so many – from adventurous travellers looking to visit far flung lands we know little about to book lovers who prefer to travel with their eyes in the comfort of their own homes. It has also inspired writers, researchers, everyone who likes to travel and even a Hollywood movie!
It is the sort of place you could come to for inspiration, if you were planning a holiday but couldn’t quite decide where to go.
No matter how exotic or unusual your destination, the travel book shop will have some literature to accompany you on your journey. Every country in the world is covered. The travel bookshop has a comprehensive range of up-to-date guide books. There is also a wealth of travel journals and literature, lots of history, a great maps section, atlases and a special section on rare books and limited editions. Books are generally arranged by country so it’s easy to browse your area of interest. If you can’t find what you are looking for, the staff is very helpful and always happy to answer your questions.
There are endless gift possibilities if you're struggling to find something special.
Many people enter the travel bookshop looking for something specific but get side-tracked – so be warned! There are lots of little gems waiting to be discovered, such as adventure weekend break ideas, wildest spots in Britain, from great London walks to the fascinating history of Madagascar.
So, come in for a browse and travel the world! Whatever happens, you are bound to come away inspired.
